On the 11th December 2018, the Annual General Meeting of the Windaroo Lakes Veteran Golfers Advisory Committee will be conducted at the Windaroo Lakes Golf Club.

At that meeting, reports relating to the 2017/2018 events year will be presented by all office bearers.

Also, at that meeting, all positions within the current committee will be declared vacant and elections will be undertaken to elect office bearers for the 2018/2019 events year.

The current committee would like to see as many members as possible attend this very important meeting.

There are major issues for discussion, which will effect the transition from Veterans events to Masters Events in 2019, as previously reported in other documents.

As it is important for members to have knowledge of some subject matter prior to the meeting, the Captain has prepared his 'Captains Report' and this is now distributed for the information of members.'

CAPTAINS REPORT

Welcome fellow members of the Windaroo Lakes Veteran Golfers, on this our final day of play, and the conducting of our Annual General Meeting. As was the case last year, this year has been a busy one for the committee and all players that have taken part in our weekly events. We have had some disturbances along the way, mainly due to weather and the resulting condition of the course, but we managed near a full year of golf.

As Captain, I would like to thank all members for being patient with me, as I completed a second year in the position. I have had some lengthy discussions with members, and fellow committee members, over a vast range of subjects. Fortunately, there have not been too many controversial or difficult matters to deal with, and no matters of rules adjudication required. I hope that I have been approachable in dealing with matters raised with me. I, no doubt, have made some mistakes along the way but I hope I have been able to resolve most of them.

As you know, one of the main decisions, if not the most important one, for the AGM is the election of office bearers for the 2018/2019 season, which has already commenced in November this year. It is going to be vitally important for a committee to be formed to manage the Windaroo Lakes Veteran Golfers, through this period, particularly with the changes that will take place next year. I would like to encourage all members to take an active role in the decision-making processes for the veteran’s group.

I want to emphasise that the Veterans group is not being abandoned with the change in play to Masters. There is a choice for members to remain, or join, the Windaroo Lakes Veteran Golfers. This will have benefits to the members who remain, or join, and these will be discussed further in the AGM. I don’t want to elaborate in these notes as I have sent out a transition document and that has points for discussion. All I will say is that I, as your present Captain, want the Veterans to remain and in the future play in District, State and Interstate events.

At this year’s AGM, I will not be re-standing for the position of Captain. I have made this clear to fellow committee members and some members of the club. I have been pressed to re-stand but I have personal reasons for making this decision. I don’t wish to go into those reasons. I would also like to say that is my view that this position should be performed by a local resident, or a person close to the club in either residential or playing status, i.e. playing twice/three times a week and having close ties with the club. As many of you know, I still am a family man with my wife and I being carers to teenage children in care.

Golf Events.

Throughout the year, we have conducted most of our scheduled events and success has been achieved by our golfers, which is represented in last weeks Presentation Day and Christmas Dinner. I would like to, again, congratulate all the members who have won, or been runner-up, in those events. Some very good scores were recorded along the way. I don’t propose to go through the events, in this report – all of you should be aware where that information is recorded.

I would like to address the Albert & Logan District events that have been attended, and represented by, golfers from our club: The A & L Teams event was conducted at Carbrook GC (Rd 1), Meadowbrook GC (Rd 2) and River lakes GC (Rd 3). Our team played well at Carbrook and were close to the lead. Unfortunately, our team did not do as well at Meadowbrook and River lakes, although I believe that all team members had good days at each.

The District Championships were conducted at Mt. Warren Park GC (13/07/2018), Redland Bay GC (17/08/2018) and Windaroo GC (21/09/2018). Congratulations go to all players who took part in the championships and a special congratulations must go to Maria May, Barry Jennings and John Zygis for being awarded for their efforts in the championships.

Other inter-club competitions were conducted and these are reported on hereunder:

  • Mt. Warren Park Challenge – annual event conducted between veteran golfers from Mt. Warren Park and Windaroo Lakes. At the first round (14/06/2018), Mt. Warren Park easily won the day but all players had a good day and very good scores were compiled by our regular hall of famers. The second round was conducted at Windaroo Lakes on the 19/06/2018 and our club members played extremely well to crush the guests. Or, it may the case that Mt. Warren Park didn’t handle our course all that well. Hence, we managed to retain the Mt. Warren Park Challenge Trophy.
  • Jack Creevey Shield, challenge between Coolangatta Tweed Heads Veterans and Windaroo Lakes Veterans – the first round was played at Coolangatta Tweed Heads GC on the 11/05/2018, in conjunction with that club’s Visitors Day in which other clubs also played. Unfortunately, our score line on the day was not good and Coolangatta Tweed Heads had a very good lead. The second round of the challenge was to played at Windaroo Lakes on the 27/11/2018 but unfortunately Coolangatta Tweed Heads had to pull out and the re-match could not occur. Due to forfeit, we will retain the shield. Hopefully, this competition will be resurrected in 2019.

Windaroo Lakes Events of Note:

On the 30/03/2018, we conducted our annual Irish 4 Ball event and as the case with 2017, the event was well attended and very good scores were recorded. The usual suspects team of Lyn Bassett, Bev Garvey, Tricia Hewitt and Stewart Daniels won the day with 93 total points on a countback, from the teams of Neville Finlayson, Herb Panjas, Jim Powe and Lance Bourke (93 pts) and Kerwyn Kleinschmidt, Barrie Mann, Kevin Fuller and Bob Swarbrick. A small number of our players decided to take the Irish theme to its fullest extent and dress for the part – you couldn’t miss them on course.

On the 28/08/2018, we conducted our annual Gala Day event, with lunch thereafter. A good, fun day was had by all and the golf was pretty good too. Winners on the day were Tony Zammit and Maria May with 47 points, from John Zygis and George Reid (46 Pts), Brian Josey and Bruce Chamberlain (46 Pts), Don Bowden and Rob Swarbrick (45 Pts), and Ross Laumann and Mary Jennings (45 Pts).

Club Championships – As reported, and well rewarded last week, Rosa Vorhauser and Peter Bylett are our club champions for 2018 – well done to both. On a lighter note, Peter does try to give me golf lessons whilst playing a round, all to no avail but I like to make him think that he is important and can improve my game.

Again, congratulations to all our winners throughout the year. I must congratulate all our golfers for turning up each week and playing in our regular events. We have tried to increase our playing group each week, had some success on specific days but average numbers remained the same throughout the year.

Outstanding Winners Vouchers and Golf Balls

Throughout the year, I have maintained an up-dated list of outstanding vouchers and golf balls each week. These lists have been displayed and used by some members to collect what is owning to them. Unfortunately, most members have not searched out their winnings and this has required some chasing. All in all, the process I adopted was reasonably successful, at least in keeping a record of vouchers and balls.

At the time of completing this report, there are a large number of golf balls to be collected and a small number of vouchers to be collected. Hopefully, by the time of the presentation of this report, all such vouchers and golf balls will have been issued. In the event that there are vouchers and golf balls left over, a list will be provided to the Club’s Proshop, so members can collect these through that location.

As from January 2019, due to the transition to Masters events, all vouchers and golf balls will be collected through the Proshop. It is unknown whether a presentation will continue, following golf, in 2019 – this will be a decision for the incoming committee.

Record Keeping and Advertising of Winners.

I have tried to keep the records pertaining to our events recorded and up to date. The weekly results have been recorded to our books (Proshop and personal Captain’s record) as well placed on the website through miniwebs (Brenda Baber). I would like to publicly thank Brenda and other team members for their assistance in recording this information for us. I would like to thank them also for assisting me in getting email messages out to members – I have received a good response from some members regarding this.

Complaints and Matters of Issue

There have been very few complaints raised by members throughout the year. Any matters raised have been able to be resolved without any angst. Some suggestions have been made to me about various matters and I have attempted to accept, and act on, those suggestions. There have been no outlandish suggestions that have caused me to get heart palpitations which is a good thing – thanks for being gentle on me.

I don’t propose, in this document, to talk about the transition to Masters next year – that has been covered in a previous document. The only issue that I wish to raise here is the committee for 2018/2019. I have raised a discussion item in the AGM agenda for the make-up of the committee, and I have proposed that the committee be constructed of the following:

  • President/Captain
  • Secretary/Treasurer
  • Two members – Vice President/Captain and Vice Secretary/Treasurer

A discussion paper about these positions is attached for information. Members will need to determine how the committee is to be formed.
